HAMMEMIT - Morthwork - FEF22 - SOLD OUT

The second FEF release from the dark master of arcane English ambience is his most minimal and purest expression yet, consisting entirely of solo guitar instrumentals (along with some avian bookending).

Recorded amid the chalk downs of Wiltshire and titled in the area's 17th century dialect, MM evokes the distant mysterious past through modern means. There is beauty and calm to be found in these woods, but the ancient and malevolent lurk there also. Morthwork is melancholy, haunted, and alluringly sinister.

Soon are a duo from Maine, consisting of Naythen Wilson (familiar from his Jandek covers tape This is a Death Dream) and Stephen Cicia.

Their bleak, doom-laden idiom combines deliberate and chance elements in raw but carefully balanced arrangements, with field recordings given equal weight to instrumental parts, cryptic-language vocals and percussion that could just as likely be the sound of manual labour as deliberate musical expression. On occasion it recalls the improvised abstraction of Pelt or the bleak rituals of Abruptum, but defies categorisation.

Soon's music is mystical, deep and nocturnal but never vague, and maintains a profoundly mournful and cathartic emotional core.

Johannes Schebler's Baldruin has emerged over the last couple of years via a stream of enchanting tapes, including several splits on the SicSic label. His largely acoustic psychedelic miniatures suggest dark fairytale stumbles across strange and spectral things in the deep woods, leaving the listener with fleeting, amorphous impressions. Comparisons are hard to draw, but there are occasional hints of Popul Vuh, or Faust's more pastoral moments.
This album consists of collaborations with 14 like-minded artists, the list of which reads like a partial who's who of the current cassette underground. From Germany: Least Carpet, Flamingo Creatures, Kolter, Hering und seine sieben Sachen, Pretty Lightning, Agnes Beil, and the mysterious Claire. From the US: [n.], Stone Baby, Karnak Temples, and Former Selves: plus Austria's Bird People, Finland's Uton, and Sunhiilow from France.

The collaborative approach makes for the most varied and kaleidoscopic Baldruin release to date, running to 23 tracks and 67 minutes.

BUCHIKAMASHI - Out of Body Experience - FEF19 - SOLD OUT

Buchikamashi, aka Shin Buchikama, aka Ginoha label head Hiroshi Mizuno, has been refining his idiosyncratic new age style over a slew of concise cassette releases. Any crystals'n'yoga connotations of the genre are undercut by mischievous humour and sonic intensity. This blissed-out astral trip takes unexpected detours into dense passages that, like a potent psychedelic, may induce ecstasy or paranoia depending on mood. But, of course, transcendence has to hurt a little bit.

Composed and Channeling By Shin Buchikama
Synthesizer, field recording, Tibetan bells, mixed By Mizuhiro

Recorded between January - March 2013

Cover art by Karen Constance

Catherine Sikora is a West Cork native who moved to New York in 2000 to pursue a career as saxophonist, improviser and composer. As well as being a prolific solo player, collaborators have included Eric Mingus, Han-Earl Park, Joe Giardullo, Karl Berger, Matt Lavelle, Francois Grillot, Ras Moshe, Art Bailey and Jeremy Bacon.

This release documents last February's trio set at the Joinery in Arbour Hill, Dublin, with trombonist Colm O'Hara (Yurodny, Thoughtfox, North Strand Kontra Band, The Dirty Jazz Club, ReDiviDeR) and drummer David Lacey (Legion of Two, Cian Nugent, Paul Vogel, among countless others).

It's a very dynamic performance, ranging from the edge of audibility to fiery ensemble playing, marked throughout by tremendous subtlety, attentiveness and focus. Sikora and O'Hara alternate between lyricism and breathy abstraction, with Lacey propulsive and textural by turns.

The download code provides Arbour as a single uninterrupted track, and two bonus Catherine Sikora solo improvisations recorded at the same show.

Whirling Hall Of Knives is a collaboration between Irish electronic boffins Magnetize and The Last Sound. This single 38-minute piece comes only a few months after their acclaimed Trensmat LP Devisions. Eschewing the pounding rhythms of its predecessor, it's dense, harsh, eerie, ecstatic, nerve-shattering noise / drone all the way. Like drowning in ectoplasm. Flee in terror or submit entirely.

Part II (18.59)

Magnetize: oscillators/guitars
Barry M: Synth/guitar/vox

INNERCITY - Mental Institution for Outsider Drone Music - FEF16 - SOLD OUT

Innercity is Belgian Hannss Dens' prolific and relentlessly exploratory synth project, which stands in contrast to the prevailing escapist vibes of the synth underground in favour of a more visceral, rough-hewn soundworld.

As the title hints, this release is Innercity at its most askew and disorientating, evoking grimy urban scenes infused with comedown paranoia and sleep-deprived jitteriness. The two long tracks are more sustained and less episodic than much of Dens' earlier work.

2. πgfaces       (18.13)

Modulator ESP is Nottingham resident Jez Creek’s vehicle for improvised electronica. While most obviously indebted to Kosmische pioneers such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, Creek’s long-form, mercurial and intensely psychedelic explorations veer unpredictably between noise, drone and ambient. As well as a host of self-released CDRs, Jez performs live every fortnight on the electro-music.com show Adventures in Sound.

"Inner Cosmos" is a massive 90-minute trip taking in shifting  seismic drones, clouds of atonal noise and unexpected oases of  melody.

1. From Spaces Within (45:04)
2. To Spaces Without (44:27)

Compiled from live improvised recordings made on 13.06.12 and
12.12.12, edited and mixed on 24.03.13.
Instruments used: nord modular, nord modular g2, blofeld, op-1 and ipad running waveshaper, samplewiz, modaxis and igendyn.

North Carolina's Chad Davis is best known as the multi-instrumentalist behind acclaimed doom band Hour of 13, and was also a member of spacerockers U.S. Christmas. For the last decade, Davis has quietly been performing and recording analogue synth music as Romannis Mötte, but has yet to release any until now. As the album title suggests, the project is primarily influenced by Kosmische pioneers Klaus Schulze, Manuel Göttsching and Tangerine Dream, with the occasional hint of John Carpenter's soundtrack work.

Though undeniably rooted in a late-70s / early-80s style, this is no mere exercise in vintage gear fetishism. Davis' carefully arranged, slowly unfurling pieces reward repeated and attentive listening, and show a musical polymath at ease in a style we might not have associated him with, but for which his passion is obvious.

Kozmische is also to be released on vinyl and CD on other labels, with different artwork and slightly different track listings.

HAMMEMIT - The Ghastliere Morrowe - FEF13 - SOLD OUT

Michael Morthwork is responsible for English black metal / noise project Emit. The evolution of a more ambient sound necessitated the establishment of a new identity: Hammemit. Releases to date have included the albums Spires Over The Burial Womb (2008) and Nature Mystic (2009).

The self-description "modern music for medieval sensibilities"  (and vice versa) turns out to be evocative, with reverbed guitars enveloping the listener in a murk of olde religion and hermitic ritual from occult corners of a distant dark age.

The two tracks on side one of this cassette originally appeared last year as an 8" acetate on the PseudoArcana label. On this expanded reissue, the stylistic scope is broadened by the addition of a further four-song suite, taking in pastoral flute, harrowing chanting,  and Hainoesque guitar drone.

This split release showcases two new projects featuring members of Irish doom band Wreck of the Hesperus.

Ordnance is a duo of Andrew Cunningham and Cathal Rodgers. While the sound bears some of the murky hallmarks of WOTH, this project is influenced by the underground black metal of Ride for Revenge and Beherit. And whereas Raymond Keenaghan's liquid drumming is a signature aspect of the parent band, here it's replaced with a pounding, martial drum machine. The atmosphere is one of crushing negativity and sardonic contempt, with serpentine riffs that seem to mock any semblance of hope.

Fans of Rodgers' drone and noise work might not be surprised to learn that solo project Spermicidal is a further step away from familiar territory. The drum machine remains but recognisable riffs are largely replaced with searing sheets of atonal guitar noise. In the absence of  landmarks, the listener is left stranded in a disorientating landscape of hissed, liminal vocals and frigid atmospheres. Reaching the end of this side is akin to awaking from a nightmare, unable to recall specifics but left with a feeling of profound unease.

Fort Evil Fruit accepts no responsibility for any existential distress or damage to sanity resulting from exposure to these recordings. You are alone in an indifferent universe.

MEITHEAL - Early in the Spring, Late in the Fall - FEF11 - SOLD OUT

Mike Gangloff is best known as a member of drone improvisers Pelt and Spiral Joy Band, as well as Appalachian old-time outfit The Black Twig Pickers. In March of last year he performed at one of Vicky Langan's Black Sun events in Cork, alongside David Colohan's Raising Holy Sparks, and the Cork Sacred Harp Singers, with which Langan is  involved. The three musicians played a short piece together to close the show. The trio, now named Meitheal, reconvened to appear at Newcastle's Tusk Festival in October.

The material here is largely culled from the Sacred Harp tradition, with vocals backed by Gangloff and Langan's twin fiddles and Colohan's harmonium and shruti box drones. On the Tusk recording, each member sings lead in turn (culminating in what may be Colohan's finest recorded vocal to date). The unadorned, unaffected approach allows the musicians' characters, and the traditions that shaped them, to shine through. In this way the music effortlessly reunites the folk traditions of Ireland and the Southern United States, while being informed by the hillbilly drone of Henry Flynt. Songs that date from as far back as the 19th century are placed in an unusual yet sympathetic context, retaining their directness and emotional power.

This release consists of both the Cork and Newcastle sets, as well as a rehearsal prior to the latter, and so contains Meitheal's entire recorded work to date.
